EXOTIC WOODS- AFRICAN PADAUK

At LuxEdge Furniture, our passion lies in creating stunning pieces with a wide variety of woods, each possessing unique characteristics. Among these quality materials, one of our favourites to work with is African Padauk.

Padauk is a premium exotic hardwood from Central and Tropical West Africa. Our artisans have built over a dozen beautiful tables with this material and have found that Padauk is a very easy wood to work with as it is very hard and sturdy. However, when finishing the piece, the nature of the wood is very oily which means that in order to achieve the perfect finish, it is essential to select the appropriate products and adhere to the correct application processes meticulously. Each step in the finishing procedure plays a crucial role in determining the overall look and quality of the end result.

One of our favourite characteristics of Padauk is its gorgeous colour. It’s colour can vary, ranging from a pale pinkish orange to a deep brownish red. Most pieces tend to start a vibrant reddish orange when freshly cut, darkening substantially over time to a deep reddish brown (some lighter-colored pieces can age to a grayish brown).

The cost of this wood is very similar to any other premium hardwoods such as Black Walnut or White Oak. In our region, we can find Padauk wood slabs at Exotic Woods in Burlington, Ontario.

One important consideration when working with this wood is that the sawdust created during the milling or sanding process is very toxic. The dust generated during sanding is exceptionally fine, posing a potential risk to respiratory health if proper safety precautions, such as suitable protective gear, are not diligently employed during the sanding process.

In conclusion, we firmly believe that Pauduk furniture stands out as an excellent choice when seeking a striking statement piece for your home or office decor.
